Greening the Meeting

At the 1997 meetings in Seattle, it was decided that the Environmental Quality Committee (now the Conservation Committee) would develop recommendations to minimize the environmental impact of the Society’s activities. The committee has developed a list of possible actions relating to the annual meeting that can be implemented with minimal inconvenience to the organizing committee and to the membership at large. Many of these suggested actions are dependent on a decision by the Society as to whether and how much members are willing to trade off convenience for cost in the process of reducing environmental impacts (fortunately, many proposed actions are actually money-savers). Our objective in these “greening” efforts is to fulfill the general mission of the annual meeting in the most efficient, environmentally sound, and economic manner possible. For additional information about the ASIH Conservation Committee, contact Frank McCormick.

Fundraisers

ASIH Graduate Student Travel Award Book Raffle

A book raffle will be conducted to raise funds for graduate student travel awards. Tickets may be purchased during the Joint Meeting, with the funds going directly toward student travel awards for 2019. The books are donated by publishers, booksellers, society members, etc.

ASIH thanks meeting attendees who participate in the student-run book raffle, which directly supports student travel to the JMIH. In recognition that today’s student members are the future of ASIH and that attendance at the JMIH encourages society involvement, ASIH matches dollar for dollar funds raised at the raffle. Please help ASIH promote our students, be generous, and make this year’s raffle a great success.

CURRENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Books, journals, reprints and more available at the Snowbird meeting (JMIH) and from the storage unit in Salt Lake City

The remaining contents of the Roger Conant, Ernie Liner and Victor Hutchison Libraries are being stored at a facility in Salt Lake City, compliments of our former Publications Secretary Breck Bartholomew. It is time to find good homes for these books, journals and reprints. Several boxes of Ernie Liner’s books will be taken to the JMIH in Snowbird (24-28 July 2019) for the silent and live auctions. Anyone wishing to sort through the material in the storage facility in Salt Lake City is invited to do so. The storage unit is 12 x 30 feet and is full. It includes the Conant and Liner filing cabinets (also available), boxes of books, journals and reprints, as well as various pieces of framed art, posters and other items from the Liner collection. Please note that to get to the storage unit in Salt Lake City from Snowbird, you will need a vehicle. Breck will be available throughout the JMIH to meet at the storage unit. You can make prior arrangements with Breck by email (Breck@herplit.com) or phone (801-867-1042). Materials at the storage unit will be priced as follows: paperback books $2; hardback books $5; other items will be on a donation basis. You will need to take the library materials with you and ship them home yourself. At the end of the JMIH, the remaining books, journals and reprints will be given to a worthy institution.

Child Care

Dear Colleagues,

All of the JMIH societies participating in the meeting this summer at Snowbird agree that child care is an important issue and they have stepped up to make it possible for parents to participate in the meeting at a very low cost. Sitting will be arranged on site by Preferred Sitters, a national company that has been handling this for SICB for many years. They will come to the meeting venue and set up a ‘camp’ with toys, games, and reading materials appropriate to the ages they are watching. The cost to parents will be $5 per hour and sitting will be available from 7:30am to 10pm on Thursday, July 25, Friday, July 26, Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28, 2019. Parents will need to get in touch with Brittany Ashley (Bashley3549@gmail.com) about their childcare needs prior to your arrival. This is key for planning purposes. Though drop in child care may be available it is not guaranteed. Get in touch early and work out the details of your particular child care situation.
